Apply to be a Peer Advisor

The Sociology Peer Advisor Program offers junior and senior sociology majors a way to gain in-field experience while assisting students in their major or minor. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in a future career in advising, counseling, student services or higher education. The position is year long (Fall, Winter and Spring) and students earn five units of individual study each quarter. This is not a paid position.

Duties of the position include:

  • Advising students on major/minor requirements
  • Answering questions on sociology policies and procedures
  • Holding drop-in advising times twice a week, and occasional appointments with students
  • Assisting with the undergraduate advisor's drop-in hours and appointments
  • Creating academic plans
  • Referring students to campus resources
  • Replying to emails and phone calls
  • Maintaining department forms and handouts
  • Representing the sociology department during various events
  • Assisting department staff and faculty
  • Attend weekly peer advisor meetings
  • Completing academic requirements each quarter, such as reflection papers and weekly readings
  • Completing a major project throughout the academic year

Eligiblity:

  • One year commitment: Fall, Winter, and Spring 2018-19
  • Be a junior or senior
  • Declaring in a sociology major
  • Have completed several SOCY requirements
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Have interest in education, school counseling/advising, or student services
  • Able to enroll in a 5-unit field study course each quarter
  • Able to commit up to 15 hours a week on position duties
