Staff Hire: Sociology Department Programs Coordinator

The Department of Sociology, at the University of California, Santa Cruz is pleased to announce its new Department Programs Coordinator, Darshani Alahan!

Darshani recently graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Sociology BA degree after transferring from Diablo Valley College in 2014. She graduated with Highest Honors in the major, Comprehensive Honors for her senior thesis titled Growing up as a Second-Generation White American Hindu: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach to an Ethnographic Study under faculty sponsor Ben Crow, and University Honors Summa Cum Laude.

Last academic year, Darshani was one of the department's founding members of the undergraduate peer advisor program. In addition, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from her work with STARS (Services for Transfer and Re-Entry Students), the Disability Resource Center and the Transfer Preparation Program in Undergraduate Admissions.

Darshani will provide much needed administrative support in the department especially for the undergraduate program including:

  • Scheduling undergraduate and graduate courses

  • DRC accommodations

  • TA Turnaround reports

  • Course approvals and revisions

  • Permission code and course roster assistance

  • Online evaluations

  • Undergraduate records maintenance

  • Managing social networks

  • Overseeing the undergraduate section of the website
