Research and Travel Awards

Research and Travel Awards

The Sociology Department provides annual research and travel awards to its graduate students to support their dissertation research, MA research, as well as paper presentations and panel participation at conferences.

The call for these awards and the application materials are processed in the Spring quarter.

Awards Policy

The award amounts in any given year are determined by the available funds and the volume of applications within the following GEC-established parameters.

Conference travel awards are capped at $500 per academic year.

Dissertation research awards are capped at $1,500 per academic year. These awards are intended for short field site visits and other research-related expenses.

The total cap on Research & Travel awards during a student’s time in the program is $3,000.

Students on academic probation and/or beyond normative time will not be considered for awards.

Per Graduate Division policy, students must be enrolled in the quarter to be eligible for the awards.

The department recognizes that research and conference travel costs could be higher than the department award limits. Thus, students are highly encouraged to seek external funding as well.
