Research and Travel Awards

Research and Travel Awards

The Sociology Department administers research and travel awards to support students in their dissertation research, MA research, as well as paper presentations and panel participation at conferences.

The call for applications will occur in the Winter quarter and applications materials will be due in the Spring quarter.

The total cap on Research & Travel awards during a student’s time in the program is $2,500 to $3,000.

Awarding Policy

Due to the high demand of requests and limited funding, the GEC established award parameters that were implemented during the 2016-17 academic year.

Conference travel awards will be capped at $500 per academic year. The department recognizes that travel expenses to attend conferences are much higher than this amount. Thus, students are highly encouraged to seek external funding for conference travel.

Dissertation research awards will be capped at $1,500 per academic year. These awards are intended for short field site visits; thus, we encourage students to apply for external fieldwork grants.

Furthermore, students on academic probation and/or beyond normative time will not be considered for awards.

Spring 2018 Applications

The Spring 2018 application deadline is Thursday, April 26, 2018. Please see below for application links and updates for this year’s process.

  • There are 2 separate applications: one for Conference Travel Award requests and the other for Research Award requests. You are welcome to submit an application in each category.
  • All supplemental documents (i.e. receipts, travel itineraries, lodging invoices) need to be uploaded with the application.
  • Please notify your advisor of your Research and Travel Award applications since a statement of support is required for each request. Advisor's need to email their statement/s by April 26, 2018 to the Graduate Coordinator.
  • The Conference Travel Award application will allow you to submit funding requests for up to 2 conferences.
