Transfer Student Information

Transfer students listing Sociology as their major on their admissions application will have as their status listed as Proposed Sociology, which is considered undeclared. Students who wish to declare must complete the prerequisite courses attend a Declaration Session.

Students who have taken courses at the community college may have already satisfied some of the lower division Sociology requirements (Socy 1 and 10). While the Admissions Office may accept courses toward your UCSC degree, it is up to the department to determine whether a course counts toward the major requirements. Check online at www.assist.org to see whether a course you have taken is articulated to satisfy UCSC Sociology Requirements. If you took your lower division courses outside the California community college system, or have upper division Sociology courses from another four-year institution, and would like to them have count toward the Sociology degree, you must petition the department for their approval. To do so, collect course materials (syllabus is required) and bring them to your faculty advisor or, if you haven't declared the major, the Undergraduate Advisor with a Course Substitution Petition (PDF) for review. Regardless of previous coursework, you must take a minimum of eight of the fourteen courses from among the regular offerings of the Sociology Department to graduate with a Sociology degree from UCSC. These eight courses may not be individual studies.
