Disqualification Policy The Sociology department has a disqualification policy to ensure that students in the major make sufficient progress toward their degree. The policy states “Students receiving a D, F, NP, or W twice in any upper-division core course will be disqualified from the major or minor.” This means that receiving a non-passing grade in the same core course (Socy 103A, 103B, 105A or 105B) twice is grounds for disqualification from the major or minor. Students receiving non-passing grades in two different core courses will receive two warnings, but do not meet the criteria to be disqualified. Students and their college will be notified by the department no later than the first day of instruction of the quarter following the disqualifying failure. Students who feel there were extenuating circumstances surrounding their failure of the course may appeal their disqualification by submitting a letter to the chair of the UEC. This appeal must be filed no later than 15 days after the disqualification notification was mailed, or the 10th day of classes in the quarter of the disqualification, whichever is later. For further information regarding the disqualification process, contact the Sociology Undergraduate Advisor.
