Declaration Sessions

Home Undergraduate Program Declaration Sessions

There will be declaration sessions each quarter to declare the major, intensive major, combined major and GISES minor. To declare the Sociology minor please make an appointment with the undergraduate advisor within the first four weeks of the quarter.

To sign up for one of the declaration sessions visit the Sociology Department Office located in College 8, room 226. Sign-up sheets will be posted outside the main office for the remaining declaration sessions that quarter. All declaration sessions will be held in College 8, room 207. Sessions last approximately one hour.

Steps to Declare

In order to declare, you must have completed all lower-division requirements listed below. If you are declaring an intensive major or GISES minor your self-evaluation and SOCY 196G project proposal must also be approved prior to declaring. Students should be aware of what curriculum year they are following, and follow all requirements for that year.

Current Declaration Requirements

Sociology Major: Complete the three lower-division courses (Socy 1, 10 & 15) with a GPA of 3.0 or better in those courses
Intensive Major: Complete six lower-division courses (Socy 1, 10, 15, 30A, 30B & 30C) with a GPA of 3.0 or better in those courses
Combined Sociology/LALS Major: Complete two lower-division courses out of Socy 1, 10 and 15 with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Students must also complete LALS 10.
GISES Minor: Complete four lower-division courses (Socy 15, 30A, 30B & 30C) with a GPA of 3.0 or better in those courses
Sociology Minor: Complete one lower-division course (out of Socy 1, 10 & 15) with a B or better in the course

The Declaration Process

• Go to advising.ucsc.edu/student/declaration to download the Declaration of Major/Minor Form
• Enter your contact information and complete the first section with GE courses completed
• Submit the form to your college for approval of this section. You must obtain the signature from the college before attending a declaration session.
• Attend a Sociology declaration session
• During the session you will be given an overview of the majors and minors, create a plan for the remainder of your courses, and be given information on how to select a faculty advisor.
• Obtain faculty advisor signature. Both your faculty advisor and the undergraduate advisor must sign the form before your declaration of major can be processed.
• Return to the undergraduate advisor to sign off on your form. Combined majors must also go to LALS.
• If needed, return to the college for approval of your extension of enrollment.

What to bring to the declaration session

• Declaration of Major Form with a signature from your college
• A preliminary plan for completing the rest of your courses for the major
• A pen
