The Sociology Department Welcomes Jessica, Mariel, Sofia and Suzi as its new Undergraduate Peer Advisors!

Newly assigned peer advisors, Jessica, Mariel, Sofia and Suzi are available in Rachel Carson College Room 226 in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Their drop-in advising hours can be found on the website, alongside regular drop-in advising hours with Undergraduate Advisor and Program Coordinator, Tina Nikfarjam. Peer advisors can also be reached at sociologypeer@ucsc.edu.

You may have already seen our peer advisors around, but we would like to take this opportunity to introduce them:

Jessica is a senior majoring in Sociology and minoring in Education. She started at UCSC as a first year student at Oakes College. In addition to being a peer advisor in the Sociology Department, she also works as an academic intern for the MESA Schools Program. She also has experience working for several education-based organizations in Los Angeles. She plans to attend graduate school to receive her Masters in Education and later she wishes to obtain a PhD in Sociology or Education.

Mariel is a senior double majoring in Sociology and Feminist Studies. She has been actively involved in student leadership within Oakes College, where she worked as a Community Assistant last year, and is now working as a Neighborhood Assistant. Along with being a Neighborhood Assistant, Mariel dedicates herself to the Oakes Core Course entitled “Communicating Diversity for a Just Society” as a Course Assistant. She is passionate about helping people and has devoted her college career to working with students. In the near future, she hopes to pursue her Masters in Social Work with the goal of one day becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in her hometown-Oakland, CA- or the greater Bay Area.

Sofia is a senior majoring in Sociology and minoring in Literature. They have been extremely involved in student life not only as an Neighborhood Assistant at Oakes college, but also as one of the co-leads for the Practical Activism Conference. After graduation, they plan on attending graduate school for a degree in School Counseling and hope to become a counselor for high school students or possibly even taking over Tina's job someday. For now, their only focus is graduating and figuring out if they want to write a thesis.

Suzi is a senior majoring in Sociology. She transferred to UCSC Fall of 2015 and is planning to graduate in Spring of 2016. She has previous volunteer experience at a woman's shelter as well as volunteer and work experience at organizations aimed at dealing with issues with substance abuse.  After graduating, she plans on continuing on to grad school majoring in Social Work with a particular focus on mental health and substance abuse.

Please join us in welcoming our wonderful new peer advisors!
