Graduate Awards
The following awards are available to graduate students through the Department of Sociology.
DANE & MARY FRAN ARCHER UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE AWARD
The Dane and Mary Fran Archer Fund was established to support two awards for outstanding papers on subjects that reflect the work of Dane Archer, Professor Emeriti of the Sociology Department at University of California, Santa Cruz. One award will be for a paper on violence, war, and peace. The second award will be for a paper on cultural differences. The awards given will be based on originality, academic merit, and the overall quality of the paper submitted on the stated topics.

2011: Nhi Truong received the undergraduate award for her paper The Misconception of America from an Immigrant's Perspective.
2010: Liana Thompson received the graduate award for her paper on cultural differences.
2009: Natalie Purcell received the graduate award for her paper on Violence, War, Peace.
FANNY CARRUTHERS SOCIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
Anne Jane "Fanny" Carruthers Howard died on February 15, 1972. She left a portion of her estate in a trust. Her bequest designated that her trust be used to fund scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students attending the University of California at Santa Cruz. Held up in the courts for many years, the trust was finally terminated and the balance was distributed as an outright gift to UC Santa Cruz to be administered pursuant to the donor's request. Beginning in 2005, the Fanny Carruthers Sociology Scholarship Fund will be used to fund the Fanny Carruthers Award in Sociology. One or more awards will be made annually, based on financial need and academic merit, to female undergraduate or graduate students of UC Santa Cruz who are graduates of Santa Clara County high schools and who are majoring in any concentration or track within sociology.

Jessica L. Roy earned a UC Santa Cruz M.A. in sociology in June 2004. In August 2004, while she was doing dissertation fieldwork in Kenya, died in a vehicular accident near Nairobi. Her research in rural Africa was designed to illuminate the problem of access to safe water resources and the influence of gender relations on this access. Her approach was interdisciplinary, including environmental, feminist, and sociological perspectives. After Jessica’s death, her friends and family created the Jessica Roy Memorial Award, with the goal of supporting the kind of research in which she was engaged and continuing her legacy of involvement and commitment. Award terms: Graduate students in any UC Santa Cruz department may apply. Preference will be given to applicants who have a demonstrated interest in or are pursuing studies focusing on issues of equity and poverty in international development, especially in relation to women and the environment. The award is based on academic merit. It is intended to provide stipends to support fieldwork travel and research.

THE LIONEL CANTÚ GRADUATE AWARD
The Lionel Cantú Memorial Award was established to honor the life and scholarship of Professor Lionel Cantú, a professor in Sociology, who died unexpectedly on May 26, 2002. Engaged in path-breaking research and analysis on sexuality, masculinity, and migration, Professor Cantú was a devoted teacher, an inspiring mentor,and a wonderful colleague.
Eligibility: Graduate students in any department who have demonstrated an interest in one or more of the areas in which Professor Lionel Cantú focused his work. These areas include:
- Latino/a Sociology
- Immigration Studies
- Transnational/cross-border studies
- Gender and Sexuality
- Gay Men and Masculinity
