Summary of Research
My dissertation research investigates how international development non-governmental organizations (NGOs) use various types of monitoring and evaluation methodologies to address stakeholder expectations. Scholars have noted these complex sets of organizational relationships require NGOs to negotiate a type of “multidirectional accountability” among the divergent or even competing interests of their stakeholders, along with addressing their own organizational learning needs. While the accountability literature has recently begun to highlight the association between stakeholders, accountability and measurement practices, a detailed analysis of how specific methodologies and approaches (e.g., impact, participatory, randomized-controlled studies, etc.) correlate with stakeholder interests has yet to be conducted in the context of large international development NGOs. This research foregrounds the ways in which program measurement and accountability relationships mutually define, prioritize, and shape each other within the field of development. The findings of this research will contribute to the literature about NGO accountability and the use of specific monitoring and evaluation methodologies by international development organizations. |
