| Long Description | |
|
Jimiliz (Jimi) Valiente-Neighbours was born and raised in the Philippines until 1993 when she moved to the U.S. (Southern California) to join her parents Jimmy and Lisa. Her transnational life has greatly impacted her studies, activism, and engagement with the community. In San Diego where she did her undergraduate study and worked post-graduation, she has volunteered as an ESL teacher to Karen adult and children refugees; presented workshops on food, sustainability, consumption, and poverty; also facilitated discussions about the Philippine-American War and representations of Filipinos in the media; organized volunteer trips to Ensenada to help build community and learning centers; and mentored underrepresented and low-income students in the university. She remains committed to being involved in the community at Santa Cruz with her partner Robert. |
